First Time for Everything: Room Escape Game

Escape games are a subgenre of point and click adventure games that has emerged in recent years. These games usually start with the player locked in a room, car, phone booth, etc. with little to no explanation as to how they got there. The player must follow a trail of clandestine clues and games to find keys and codes that will eventually allow the player to escape. Imagine if Saw were more playful or Rube Goldberg was more masochistic. In a classic case of life imitating art, live action escape games have been opening up in major cities. Brisbane has four different ones, each with more than one scenario. Sydney, Austin, Melbourne, San Antonio, London, and New York all have at least one live escape game operating, generally with at least two scenarios. All of them appear to have opened after 2013, so the business is both new and rapidly expanding. I gathered a group […]

First Time for Everything: Australia Zoo

I love animals and looking at animals and hanging out with them and petting them and eating them. I realize that saying that I like to eat them might seem like a contradiction with the other stuff I said, but the way I see it, animals are eating each other all the time and I’m just jumping on the food chain with them. Sure, I’m joining up at the top of the food chain, but at least I am there. I also don’t really like the responsibility of owning pets. You gotta feed a thing; love it, train it, and keep it alive. There’s daily recurring responsibility there, which is my least favorite kind of responsibility. It’s a lot like having a kid, if you could get away with feeding that kid the cheapest food and not sending them to school. That means my options for hanging out with animals […]

First Time for Everything: Three Ingredient Pancakes

Pancakes. They are a breakfast staple across the world. France got fancy and made thin ones called crepes. China went nuts and put potatoes and onions in them. Japan wasn’t about to be outdone so they took that idea and slapped sauce on top of it and called it okonomiyaki. Pancakes are everywhere. I’ve had them and you’ve had them and, if you live in a town that does 24 hour diners, you eaten them at an ungodly hour when you were drunk. Personally, I’ve always come down on the waffle side of the pancake/waffle divide, but don’t worry, I’m not some kind of militant anti-pancake waffle activist. We can all live together under maple syrup. I’ve never made either pancakes or waffles before. Baking is my Achilles’ Heel in the kitchen, so pretty much anything involving flour is out. Plus, pancakes cost about three bucks at a breakfast place, […]

First Time for Everything: Oculus Rift

First Time for Everything is a blog format I am working on that involves trying something for the first time and then writing about it. It’s an endeavor in both trying to write more often and trying something new every week, thus breaking the cycle of constantly going home and watching Netflix. The Brisbane Powerhouse is currently featuring a small festival called IRL Digital Festival, which mostly features videogames and digital art. I’m generally a big fan of both of those things and I happened to be at the Powerhouse anyway, so we hit a magic intersection here between interest and convenience. There are a lot of exhibits on display, all with varying levels of functionality and wankiness, but the exhibit that interested me most is the Oculus Rift. The Oculus Rift is the new current frontrunner in the world of Virtual Reality. The Rift, developed by Oculus VR, is […]
